Common Mistakes When Reading Crypto Charts
A quick guide to reading price data without jumping to the wrong conclusions.
Panicking at a dip
Bitcoin has dropped 20% or more dozens of times and recovered each time. A red day on the chart does not mean the end. Look at the 30-day or 90-day view before reacting.
Chasing a green candle
Buying because the price just jumped 10% in an hour is how people buy at local peaks. Check the broader trend, not just the last few bars.
Staring at the 1-minute chart
Short-term charts are noisy. Random spikes and drops look dramatic but mean little. If you are checking price for a purchase decision, the 7-day or 30-day view tells a clearer story.
Ignoring volume
A price move on low volume is less reliable than one on high volume. If Bitcoin jumps $2,000 but almost nobody is trading, the move may not hold.
Confusing price with value
The number on the screen is what people are paying right now. It is not a measure of whether Bitcoin is "worth" that amount. Price is supply and demand at this moment.
Reacting to headlines alone
News moves price fast, but the initial reaction often reverses. Wait a few hours after big news before making decisions based on price alone.
Key Terms, Plain and Simple
New to crypto? These short definitions cover the words you will see on this page and across the web.
- Bitcoin (BTC)
- The first and largest cryptocurrency, created in 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. It runs on a decentralized network with no single owner.
- All-Time High (ATH)
- The highest price Bitcoin has ever reached. As of late 2025, that is around $108,268.
- Volatility
- How much and how fast the price moves. Bitcoin is known for high volatility, meaning it can swing thousands of dollars in a single day.
- Halving
- An event that happens roughly every four years where the reward for mining new Bitcoin is cut in half. This reduces new supply and has historically preceded price increases.
- Market Cap
- The total value of all Bitcoin in circulation. Calculated by multiplying the current price by the total number of coins that exist.
- Wallet
- A tool (software or hardware) that stores the keys needed to send and receive Bitcoin. It does not "hold" coins like a physical wallet. It holds the access codes.
- Exchange
- A platform where you can buy, sell, or trade Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Examples include Coinbase, Kraken, and Binance.
- Satoshi
- The smallest unit of Bitcoin. One Bitcoin equals 100,000,000 satoshis. Named after Bitcoin's creator.
- Bull Market
- A period where prices are rising or expected to rise. Optimism drives more buying.
- Bear Market
- A period where prices are falling or expected to fall. Fear and selling dominate.
Thinking About Storing Bitcoin?
If you are checking prices, you might be considering a purchase. Keeping Bitcoin on an exchange works for small amounts, but a hardware wallet gives you full control. Devices like Ledger and Trezor store your keys offline, away from hackers.
A hardware wallet is the single best step for anyone holding more than a few hundred dollars in crypto. It takes about ten minutes to set up.
